6.1 earthquake hits Turkey’s Balikesir province, killing 1 and collapsing buildings

Istanbul – Officials said an earthquake of 6.1 earthquakes in the Balikimir Province in Turkey in Turkey on Sunday, killing at least one person and caused the collapse of more than ten buildings. At least 29 people were injured.

The earthquake, with the earthquake center in the town of Sindirgi, sent shocks that were feeling about 200 km (125 miles) to the north in Istanbul – a city of more than 16 million people.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya told reporters that an elderly woman had died shortly after her withdrawal from the wreckage of a collapsed building in Sinderji. Four other people were rescued from the building.

Yerlikaya said that a total of 16 buildings in the area – most of which are abandoned and unused. He said that the mosque’s tragedies also landed.

The minister said that none of the injured are in a serious condition.

TV footage showed rescue teams asking for silence so that they could listen to the signs of life under the rubble.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Agency in Türkiye said the earthquake was followed by many wireless tremors, including one measurement of 4.6, and urged citizens not to enter the damaged buildings.

President Ragab Tayyip Erdogan has issued a statement that wished all the affected citizens a rapid recovery.

He wrote on X. “May God protect our country from any kind of disasters.”

Türkiye sits on top of the main rift lines and earthquakes.

In 2023, an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude was killed more than 53,000 people in Türkiye and destroyed or harmed hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southeast and southeast provinces. Other people were killed in the northern parts of neighboring Syria.
