DENVER (KDVR) — Denver police said three people were injured during an apparent shootout after a fight broke out at a party in Denver’s Green Valley Ranch neighborhood overnight.
Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said that one of the suspects who was shot by an officer fled the scene, and the police did not find this person.
The party and subsequent fight occurred in the 5100 block of North Biscay Court just before the 2 a.m. time change on Sunday, police said. Officers responded to reports of a fight and when they arrived they heard what they believed was an exchange of gunfire.
“They then moved toward the source of the shooting, saw several people running, and recognized someone who was carrying a weapon,” Thomas said. “They challenged that person, they didn’t drop the weapon, and he continued to pose a threat, so I believe one of the officers shot that person.”
Officers did not know if that person had been beaten by police and were unable to find him, Thomas said.
Officers found two handguns in the area, as well as three people injured in the initial gunfire police heard.
A police spokesperson told FOX31’s Kasia Kerridge there may be multiple suspects, and one of the people at the hospital may be a suspect.
All three sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital.
Thomas said it was a large party with many people participating, but they have all since fled the scene.
“This is an active scene and we are still investigating, trying to determine exactly what happened and whoever was involved,” Thomas said.
Thomas said anyone with information cannot contact police through Metro Denver Crime Stoppers anonymously.
