2 killed in East Bay crash; pursuing CHP officers also crash, suffer major injuries

(KRON) – Two people are dead and three others are seriously injured, including two California Highway Patrol officers, after a fleeing driver and two pursuing officers crashed into a sound wall on Interstate 238 in San Leandro on Saturday.

Two CHP officers in one patrol car attempted to pull over the white Mercedes for speeding on Interstate 580 in Castro Valley at 3:41 a.m. The driver sped away from officers and eventually attempted to exit onto 14th Street from the west side of I-238.

The driver failed to exit the exit and crashed into a sound wall, killing the driver and one passenger. A second passenger was taken to hospital with serious injuries, according to the CHP.

The CHP officers who were pursuing them also collided with the sound wall, resulting in serious injuries. Additional officers from the CHP, Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and Alameda County Fire Department responded to the incident.

“As a result of the second incident, the two CHP officers also sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment,” the CHP said.

The incidents are still under investigation.
